Bruce Achter

Bruce Terry Achter Free to Breathe Deeply Bruce Terry Achter, loving husband, father and "papa", donned his leathers for one last ride on his Harley into the sunset on Friday, June 19, 2009. After a long and courageous battle with lung disease, with the love of his life, Claudine and their children by his side, his soul was set free from the pain. Bruce was born January 11, 1955 to Gideon and Vertice Achter. He grew up in Holladay with six brothers and sisters where he earned his Eagle Scout and attended Olympus High School. On August 24, 1974 he married his soul mate, Claudine. Bruce was a loving, honest, hard working family man who was always quick with a joke. He enjoyed tinkering in the garage and was a perfectionist in everything that he did. He loved spending time with his growing family, especially outdoors. Some of the other hobbies he enjoyed were hunting, camping, riding his Harley, welding, and listening to classic rock. Bruce was an excellent example to his children and others around him with his strong work ethic, practical financial philosophies and compassion for others. He was a pillar of strength to us all and will be greatly missed. Bruce was a lifelong employee of the structural steel industry. He was with SME Steel Contractors for 27 years. SME was a great employer by remaining supportive and patient through his prolonged illness. The family expresses much gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the CICU at Intermountain Medical Center for the excellent care given during the last few weeks and to Dr. Pandita for his unyielding optimism over the last several years. Bruce is survived by his loving wife Claudine, children Jeremy (Jackie), Alisa Edwards (Nic), Jestina Van Dyken (Zach) and grandchildren Kaison, Taiben, Sayla, Taya, Dax, and Scottlyn. He is also survived by his parents Gideon and Vertice Achter, brothers and sisters Bryant (Pam), Ron (Brenda), Rick (Deb), Shirlene (Bob), Renee, and many loving members of the Bullough family. Bruce was preceded in death by his sister Catherine. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 26, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 S. Redwood Road. A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to services on Friday.
